The General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level (A/L) examination is a crucial pre-university qualification in Sri Lanka. It serves as the primary basis for admission to universities and higher education institutions in the country. Students typically sit for the exam after completing 13 years of education (Grade 1-13).
The A/L curriculum is divided into several streams, including Science, Mathematics, Commerce, Arts, and Technology. Students select three or four subjects from their chosen stream. A general English subject is compulsory.
The examination is conducted by the Department of Examinations, Sri Lanka, usually in August. Results are released a few months later, typically in December or January. The results determine eligibility for university admission and the specific courses students can pursue.
